Directed and written by Guillermo Arriaga, The Burning Plain (2008) is a nonlinear American drama that follows the lives of a married mother, Gina, and her lover, Nick Martinez. Set in a small town near Las Cruces, New Mexico during the mid-1990s, the story unfolds as events are revealed out of sequence. Gina’s daughter, Mariana, discovers her mother’s affair with Nick and attempts to end it by setting fire to his trailer while they are inside. However, Mariana’s plan goes awry when the flames spread to a gas tank causing an explosion that tragically takes both Nick and Gina’s lives. The following plot summary is presented in chronological order but does not depict the exact sequence of events as seen on screen.

Following the funeral of Gina and Nick, Mariana and Santiago, their son, slowly begin to form a bond. As they spend more time together, Mariana discovers she is pregnant with Santiago’s child. Despite disapproval from their families, the two flee to Mexico and decide to have their baby there. After giving birth to their daughter, Mariana leaves her family behind and changes her name to Sylvia. Over ten years later, Sylvia is working at a prestigious restaurant in Oregon. Though successful in her career, she struggles with casual relationships and frequent thoughts of ending her life. During this time, a man starts following her. It turns out to be Carlos, who is a close friend and business partner of Santiago. Following an accident involving their plane used for crop-dusting, Santiago asks Carlos to find Sylvia for him since he has been searching for her ever since she left him and their infant daughter behind.
