The Butterfly Effect (2004) is an American sci-fi thriller written and directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber. Growing up, Evan Treborn and his friends, Lenny Kagan and Kayleigh Miller, along with Kayleigh’s brother Tommy, experienced numerous psychological traumas that often left Evan with amnesia. These events included being coerced into participating in George Miller’s abusive behavior towards his children, being nearly strangled by his institutionalized father Jason Treborn (who is then killed by guards), accidentally causing the death of a mother and her baby while playing with explosives, and witnessing Tommy burn their dog Crockett alive. As a coping mechanism, Evan diligently documented his daily life in journals.
Later on, while entertaining a girl in his college dorm room, Evan stumbles upon a remarkable ability. He realizes that by reading from his old journals, he can travel through time and alter parts of his past. These time-traveling instances explain the frequent blackouts he experienced, as they were moments when his older self took over. Tragically, Kayleigh commits suicide and in an effort to prevent it, Evan travels back in time to warn George not to harm her. As a result, he returns to a reality where him and Kayleigh are a happy couple at college. However, George’s rage takes a toll on Tommy who becomes increasingly unstable. Inevitably, Tommy attacks Evan and in self-defense, Evan kills him and is sentenced to prison. While there, Evan’s mother brings him a journal during a visit which allows him to time travel once again.
