The film The Call of the Wild (2020) is based on Jack London’s novel from 1903 and tells the story of Buck, a large and gentle mix of Saint Bernard and Scotch Shepherd. He lives happily with his master, Judge Miller, in Santa Clara, California during the late 19th century. However, one night he is taken away and ends up on a ship bound for the Yukon. On the journey, a crew member uses violence to maintain discipline towards Buck. When they eventually reach Alaska, John Thornton loses his harmonica which Buck retrieves for him just before being sold to Perrault and Francoise. They run a dog sled team that delivers mail throughout the Yukon and are hoping Buck can help them meet their deadline. Buck meets the other dogs on the team including Dolly, Pike, Jo, Billie, Dub, Dave, Sol-leks and their leader Spitz who is a husky.

Buck earns the trust and devotion of Perrault, Francoise, and the other sled dogs by proving himself on their journey. He even saves Francoise from falling through the ice. These actions infuriate Spitz. Buck also begins having visions of a black wolf who guides him along the way. One night, Buck catches a rabbit but chooses to release it. Spitz kills the rabbit and then attacks Buck to assert his dominance. Despite this, with encouragement from the rest of the pack, Buck emerges as the new leader, sending Spitz away into the wild. Reluctantly, Perrault appoints Buck as lead dog due to his unmatched speed and strength, which helps them deliver mail on schedule. Finally, Thornton gives a letter he has written to his late son’s mother after being moved by Buck’s loyalty and determination.
