The Campaign (2012)
The Campaign (2012), an American political satire comedy film directed by Jay Roach and written by Shawn Harwell and Chris Henchy, follows the downfall of Democratic Congressman Camden Brady. After having an affair with a supporter that is overheard on a phone call, his fifth re-election campaign for the 14th District in North Carolina is jeopardized. Desperate to maintain control, corrupt businessmen Glenn and Wade Motch decide to back Martin Huggins, a tour guide, as Camden’s Republican opponent. Their ulterior motive is to use Martin to further their own profitable interests with a Chinese company. Under the guidance of Tim Wattley (also working for the Motch Brothers), Martin is portrayed as a successful entrepreneur and family man in order to win over voters. As his first debate with Camden approaches, Martin surprises viewers by promising to bring jobs back to North Carolina.
During a town hall debate, chaos erupts among supporters of Camden and Huggins when Huggins accuses Camden of being a Communist based on a story he wrote as a child called Rainbowland. In the midst of the commotion, Camden and Huggins also engage in a physical altercation, unable to hear each other’s insults. Adding to his troubles, Camden accidentally hits both a dog and a baby while attempting to strike Huggins. As retaliation, Camden runs a smear campaign portraying Martin as an Al Qaeda terrorist due to his facial hair. Despite this controversial move, Camden’s popularity bounces back after he is hospitalized during a snake handling ceremony gone wrong. It is then that Camden realizes the negative influence his campaign tactics may have on others, especially his son who plans to use similar methods for their school’s Class President election.
