Directed by Clive Donner, the British drama film The Caretaker (1963) stars Alan Bates, Donald Pleasence and Robert Shaw. This acclaimed film is an adaptation of the Harold Pinter play of the same name and earned the Silver Bear Extraordinary Jury Prize at the 13th Berlin International Film Festival. Aston, a reserved man who lives alone in a cluttered top-floor room of a rundown house in a poor London neighborhood, strikes up a friendship with Mac Davies, an old derelict who has recently been let go from his job at a café. With time, Aston offers him a position as caretaker of the house. However, when Aston’s brother Mick shows up and starts to torment Mac in his brother’s absence, things take an unpleasant turn. Eventually, fed up with the cantankerous old man, Aston decides to put him out.
