The Catcher Was a Spy (2018)
The Catcher Was a Spy (2018) is an American war film directed by Ben Lewin and written by Robert Rodat, based on the book of the same name by Nicholas Dawidoff. Moe Berg, an experienced 15-year baseball player, takes on a new role as a spy in the war effort to outdo Nazi Germany in developing the first atomic bomb. The Germans made a breakthrough by splitting the atom in 1938, and the race for the bomb was on. In charge of delivering this weapon was German Nobel prize winner Werner Heisenberg. To counter this threat, Moe was sent to assassinate him. Prior to his espionage activities, Moe played for Boston Red Sox and had a strong intuition. However, his coach Joe Cronin believed it was time for him to retire. Some of his team-mates privately speculated about his sexual orientation. Meanwhile, Moe was engaged in a secret relationship with Estella Huni. Despite having degrees from prestigious universities such as Princeton and Columbia University, Moe’s girlfriend Estella felt frustrated that he did not publicly acknowledge their relationship.
During a tour of Japan, Moe is approached by Kawabata and the two engage in sexual relations. Moe also captures footage of Japanese installations. In December 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the US declares war on Japan. Moe then meets with the Director of OSS, Bill Donovan, where he shows him his films of the Japanese installations. Despite Moe’s refusal to reveal his sexual orientation to Bill, he is recruited for a mission. Bill introduces him to Robert Furman and Samuel Goudsmit, who inform them about the German atom bomb project and Heisenberg’s involvement. As they travel to Italy to carry out their mission, Samuel shares how he met Heisenberg and his concerns about whether he will aid the Nazis in creating the bomb. Eventually, they successfully rescue Professor Edoardo Amaldi from retreating German forces. However, Edoardo informs Moe that if Heisenberg truly wanted to finish the bomb, he would have done so already.
