The Cell (2000) is a science fiction psychological thriller film, Tarsem Singh’s directorial debut. Child psychologist Catherine Deane is hired to use an experimental virtual reality treatment on coma patients. This involves a ‘Neurological Cartography and Synaptic Transfer System’ device managed by doctors Henry West and Miriam Kent, which allows her to enter the minds of comatose patients and try to awaken them. The technology is funded by the parents of Edward Baines, a young boy in a coma due to an unusual strain of schizophrenia caused by a viral infection. However, Baines’ progress has been hindered by a menacing alter ego that Deane avoids. Despite her lack of success, West and Kent refuse Deane’s suggestion to reverse the feed and bring Baines into her mind, fearing the potential consequences of him experiencing an unfamiliar reality.
As the FBI finally identifies serial killer Carl Rudolph Stargher, he succumbs to a debilitating coma due to his schizophrenic illness. This leaves them without any leads on the whereabouts of his most recent victim, Julia Hickson. Agent Peter Novak learns of an experimental technology and convinces Deane to enter Stargher’s mind in order to uncover Hickson’s location. Within the twisted dreamscape of Stargher’s psyche lies a haunting display of doll-like versions of his victims. Guided by Young Stargher, the innocent manifestation of his psyche, Deane delves into the repressed memories of Stargher’s past abuse at the hands of his father.
