The Choice (2016)

The Choice (2016), an American romantic drama film directed by Ross Katz and written by Bryan Sipe, follows the story of two neighbors who unexpectedly find love. Based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name, the film begins seven years prior to the main events. At this time, Travis Shaw, a charming young man from the South who catches the eye of many women, is in a casual relationship with a woman named Monica. During one evening, Travis meets his new neighbor Gabby Holland while she complains about his loud music. She also mentions that her dog Molly may have been impregnated by Travis’s dog Moby. Unlike most women, Gabby is not swayed by Travis’s charm; however, his sister Stephanie can sense his interest. While Gabby works as a doctor at a hospital, Travis assists his father Dr. Shep at their family-run veterinary clinic.

Even Shep can see the awkward chemistry between Travis and Gabby. One day at a fair, Travis and Monica run into Gabby and her boyfriend Ryan. This unexpected encounter does not sit well with Travis. Over time, Travis and Gabby form a bond as he invites her to join his friends on their lake trips. He helps Gabby when Molly gives birth while Ryan is away. She also accompanies Travis to church, where Shep delivers a sermon. The day happens to be his late wife’s 57th birthday, who passed away from cancer when Travis was 14. After this tragedy, Shep turned to religion. As they figure out what to do with the puppies, Gabby visits Travis and they begin arguing, but the underlying chemistry between them is palpable.
