The American science fiction horror film, The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), is the third installment in the Cloverfield franchise. Directed by Julius Onah and written by Oren Uziel and Doug Jung, with J. J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber as producers, the film follows a group of astronauts aboard the orbiting Cloverfield Station in 2028. Earth is facing an energy crisis and they are testing the Shepard particle accelerator to provide infinite energy. However, some believe this could also result in the ‘Cloverfield Paradox’ – opening portals to parallel universes and unleashing terrifying creatures on Earth. Ava Hamilton, a British engineer, is one of the crew members who worries about leaving her struggling relationship with husband Michael for years since losing their children in a house fire. Other crew members include American commander Kiel, German physicist Ernst Schmidt, Brazilian medical doctor ‘Monk’ Acosta, Irish engineer Mundy, Russian engineer Volkov, and Chinese engineer Tam.
After two years of failed attempts, the crew finally achieves a seemingly stable beam for the Shepard. However, this causes an overload and power surge on the station. Once basic power is restored, they notice that Earth is no longer in sight and the gyroscope used for navigation is missing. While working on repairs, strange occurrences begin to happen. One such event is the discovery of Mina Jensen, a woman fused with wires in a wall whom they are able to rescue. Additionally, Volkov experiences bizarre behavior as his eyeballs move on their own and he speaks to his reflection in a mirror. He even creates a gun using a 3D printer onboard and turns it on his fellow crew members. Suddenly, he convulses and dies, allowing a colony of worms from the station to burst out of him. Jensen warns Hamilton not to trust Schmidt, who she claims is a spy sent by the German government to keep the Shepard inactive.
