The Cobbler (2014)
The American film, The Cobbler (2014), directed and cowritten by Tom McCarthy with Paul Sado, tells the story of a New York City cobbler and his family. In the past, a group of Jewish men gathered in the shop to discuss a troublesome thug. The cobbler then showcases his special stitching machine to his son, emphasizing its significance. Presently, Max Simkin carries on the family business as the cobbler while his friend Jimmy runs the neighboring barber shop. Meanwhile, Carmen Herrera fights against realtors who want to destroy their neighborhood for development. Max’s lack of interest in the shop and close relationship with his ill mother reflect how much he misses his father, Abraham. When local thug Leon Ludlow brings in his shoes for repair, Max faces a challenge when his stitching machine malfunctions and he resorts to using Pinchas’s instead.
Max is fascinated by the transformative powers of Ludlow’s shoes. He puts them on and suddenly becomes Ludlow, inspiring him to experiment with other shoes. He takes on different identities, like a Chinese man in Chinatown or a diner at a restaurant who leaves without paying. Taryn asks Max to try on her British boyfriend Emiliano’s shoes, and he jumps at the chance. As Emiliano, he heads to a bar and catches the attention of women. One even approaches him, mentioning their previous encounter when he left with another man. Back at Emiliano’s place, Taryn invites Max to join her in the shower. However, he quickly realizes he must remove his borrowed shoes and politely declines. Wanting to bring joy to his mother, Max decides to slip into his father’s shoes for dinner with Sarah as Abraham – giving her one more night of happiness.
