The Collector (1965)
The psychological horror film, The Collector (1965), follows a socially-awkward young man named Freddie who purchases a 17th-century farmhouse with his football pools winnings. Amateur entomologist Freddie spends his time capturing butterflies and has amassed quite the collection. His obsession leads him to stalk Miranda Grey, a bourgeois London art student. One day, he follows her into a pub in Hampstead and abducts her on the street using chloroform. When Miranda wakes up, she finds herself in Freddie’s stone cellar, which he has furnished with a bed, clothing, painting tools, and an electric heater. Confused and fearful, she assumes she has been taken for ransom or as a potential sex slave. Despite her pleas to Freddie that her father is not wealthy, he remains fixated on keeping her captive.
Freddie clarifies that his intentions are not to engage in any sexual activities or demand ransom. He reveals that he and Miranda were once fellow commuters on the bus in Reading, and when she moved to London for art school, he continued to keep an eye on her. Despite Miranda’s attempt to escape by pretending to have appendicitis, she is unsuccessful and Freddie declares his love for her. In order for Miranda to ‘get to know him’ better, Freddie agrees to release her after four weeks. As time passes, he gradually allows Miranda more freedom, such as going outside for sunlight and taking supervised baths in the house. During one of these baths, Freddie’s neighbor Colonel Whitcombe shows up at the farmhouse and introduces himself, causing Freddie to gag Miranda and tie her up in the bathroom.
