The Color Purple (1985)
The American epic coming-of-age period drama film, The Color Purple (1985), directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Menno Meyjes, is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Alice Walker. The story follows Celie Harris in early 20th-century rural Hartwell, Georgia, a teenage African-American girl. After secretly giving birth to two children, her father quickly takes them from her and gives them away. Despite this hardship, Celie finds solace in her strong bond with her younger sister Nettie as they play and learn the alphabet together. A widower named Albert ‘Mister’ Johnson is interested in marrying Nettie, but their father refuses to allow it. Instead, Celie is forced to marry Mister. In an act of rebellion against their controlling father, Nettie runs away from home and seeks shelter with Celie. The two make a promise to write each other if they are separated.
Years later, in 1916, Celie has grown meek from prolonged childhood abuse. Mister’s son Harpo marries an assertive woman named Sofia, whose self-confidence she greatly admires. However, when Celie advises Harpo to emulate his father and physically discipline Sofia, she is surprised by Sofia’s fierce resistance. Confronting Celie, Sofia reveals her own history of suffering at the hands of men like Mister and warns that she will not tolerate further abuse. In fact, she threatens to harm both Harpo and Mister if they dare to lay a hand on her again. This confrontation causes Celie to re-evaluate her situation and consider standing up for herself as well. Despite years of mistreatment from Harpo, Sofia ultimately decides to leave him and take their children with her. Meanwhile, Mister brings home Shug Avery, a blues singer and his long-time mistress who is now ill and in need of care.
