The Company (2007)
The Company (2007) is a three-part serial based on the best-selling 2002 novel by Robert Littell, following the activities of the CIA during the Cold War. Ken Nolan penned the teleplay adaptation and received a Writers Guild of America Award for Television: Long Form – Adapted. The story begins in 1950 as Jack McAuliffe, Leo Kritzky, and Yevgeny Tsipin graduate from Yale and venture down different paths. While Jack and Leo join the CIA under Frank ‘The Wizard’ Wisner’s guidance, Yevgeny returns to Moscow where he is recruited by KGB spymaster Starik and falls for Azalia Ivanova. Five years later, Jack finds himself working for Harvey ‘The Sorcerer’ Torriti at a CIA station in East Berlin. He is tasked with helping East German defector Vishnevsky escape to the West by revealing MI6’s mole. However, when things go awry at Vishnevsky’s exfiltration due to the presence of KGB and Berlin Police, Jack suspects that a traitor may be in their midst.
Angleton blames Berlin for the mistake and this angers Torriti, who is determined to catch the mole by giving him a barium meal. He shares confidential information with a trustworthy MI6 contact, forcing the mole to take drastic measures to protect himself – including attempting to kill Torriti. During this time, Jack is also developing feelings for his first asset, Lili, who happens to have connections with an important scientist. When their initial plan is ruined by an ambush at a meeting, Torriti decides to try another approach. In Washington, Leo becomes Wisner’s apprentice despite Angleton’s disapproval. Additionally, Leo has fallen in love with Adele Sweet – whose father is close friends with President Eisenhower. However, when Leo proposes marriage he faces opposition from her father due to their different backgrounds – but eventually concedes. Meanwhile in Washington, Yevgeny secretly informs Azalia that he is in the United States and spends his nights deciphering complex Moscow Radio codes and delivering liquor during the day.
