The Con Artists (1976)
The Italian crime-comedy film, The Con Artists (1976), directed by Sergio Corbucci, received a David di Donatello for Best Actor, which was awarded to Adriano Celentano for his performance. In the Roaring Twenties in southern France, notorious con man Philip Bang causes a commotion during dinner and is subsequently transferred to a maximum-security prison for hard labor. However, this transfer is all part of a clever plan orchestrated by his ex-wife and former partner in crime, Belle Duke, who owns a casino yacht, and their daughter Charlotte. While being transported to another facility, Bang plans to escape through the train’s restroom but ends up unwillingly helping young Italian con artist ‘Felix’ with his own escape instead.
Felix’s newfound freedom is short-lived as he is mistaken for Bang by Belle Duke’s men. Despite clarifying his true identity, Belle Duke is displeased and demands that Felix release Bang. After narrowly escaping her henchmen, Belle Duke manipulates Charlotte into trapping Felix, leaving him with no choice but to comply with her demands. Utilizing his knowledge of the transit facility and resources such as a stolen priest’s robe and a clock bomb, Felix successfully breaks Bang out. However, Bang shows reluctance in returning to Belle Duke’s custody due to having previously betrayed her and stealing her wealth before going to prison. It is likely that Belle Duke seeks revenge and the return of her money from Bang.
