The American supernatural horror film The Conjuring (2013), directed by James Wan and written by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes, follows renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate the Annabelle case in 1968. After friends Debbie and Camilla claim to have a possessed doll, the Warrens explain that they allowed a spirit posing as a seven-year-old girl named Annabelle Higgins, who died in their apartment, to possess the doll after contacting a medium. As the hauntings escalate, Debbie and Camilla desperately turn to the Warrens for help. The couple then reveals that the doll was not really possessed but acted as a conduit for a demonic presence that manipulated Debbie and Camilla in hopes of taking over one of their bodies. In 1971, three years later, the Perron family moves into a farmhouse in Harrisville, Rhode Island.
The family consists of Roger and Carolyn, along with their five daughters: Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy, and April. Interestingly enough, their dog Sadie refuses to set foot inside the house. Curiosity leads to the discovery of a boarded up cellar entrance after a minor mishap during a game of hide and seek. Mysterious occurrences begin happening within just a few nights. All clocks in the house stop at 3:07am every day and Carolyn wakes up with unexplained large bruises each morning. Tragedy strikes when Sadie is found dead in the yard one day. Both Carolyn and Christine have terrifying encounters with an evil spirit. Seeking help, Carolyn reaches out to the Warrens who agree to conduct an investigation. During their initial meeting with Lorraine, a clairvoyant, it becomes clear that dark forces have targeted the Perron family.
