Directed by Michael Chaves, with a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick from a story co-written by James Wan, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do (2021) It is an American supernatural horror film that serves as the seventh installment in The Conjuring Universe. Set in 1981, the film follows demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren as they document the exorcism of 8-year-old David Glatzel in Brookfield, Connecticut. During the exorcism, Arne Johnson, Debbie’s boyfriend and David’s brother-in-law, invites the demon to enter his body instead. This results in Ed witnessing the demon transfer from David to Arne while he suffers a heart attack and is rushed to the hospital. A month later, Ed wakes up and confides in Lorraine about what he saw. Meanwhile, Lorraine warns authorities that something tragic will happen at the Glatzel household and Arne and Debbie move back into their apartment above a kennel where Debbie works. However, after experiencing unexplained illness, Arne becomes possessed by the demon and tragically murders his landlord Bruno Sauls by stabbing him 22 times.
Assisted by the Warrens, this American murder trial marks the first of its kind to use demonic possession as a defense. This leads to an investigation into David’s initial possession. The Warrens eventually uncover a satanic curse that was passed down through a witch’s totem. Seeking further information, they consult with Kastner, a former priest who has encountered the Disciples of the Ram cult before. He reveals that an occultist deliberately left the totem, resulting in a curse on the Glatzels and causing David’s possession. The Warrens proceed to Danvers, Massachusetts, to look into the death of Katie Lincoln, who was brutally stabbed 22 times. During their investigation, detectives discover a totem at Jessica’s residence – Katie’s missing friend. In an effort to piece together what happened, Lorraine uses her abilities to recreate the murder and uncovers that Jessica had been possessed while committing the crime before jumping off a cliff in her trance-like state. This revelation enables authorities to find Jessica’s body. At this point, the Warrens visit the funeral home where she is laid to rest and Lorraine makes physical contact with her hand in hopes of obtaining more clues from beyond.
