The Consequences of Love (2004)

The Italian psychological thriller film, The Consequences of Love (2004), was written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino. Its main character, Titta Di Girolamo, has been living in an upscale hotel in Lugano, Switzerland for the past eight years. Every day, he puts on his suit and roams around, intentionally avoiding any interactions with people. In the morning, he solves chess puzzles from the newspaper and in the evening he plays Grabber with a bankrupt aristocratic couple who are also staying at the hotel. Occasionally, he calls his family back in Italy but his wife always seems uninterested in talking to him and his adult children resent him. Despite developing feelings for Sofia, a charming and fashionable waitress at the bar, Titta remains too timid to approach her as he fears that love would complicate his subdued yet steady routine.
The mystery surrounding Titta’s existence gradually unveils itself. He was once a successful broker, managing large sums of money. However, eight years ago, he made a grave mistake by investing 250 billion Italian liras on behalf of the Mafia, resulting in a loss of 220 billion in just a few hours. As punishment, Titta was forced to live as a pawn for the rest of his life, delivering suitcases filled with money to a Swiss bank. Another secret that Titta holds is his heroin addiction. Every Wednesday at ten o’clock, he retreats to his hotel room to inject himself with the drug. One day, events begin to unfold: Titta’s outgoing stepbrother pays him a visit and encourages him to connect with Sofia more. And later on, two men from the Mafia unexpectedly arrive at his hotel room, planning to use it as their base for an assassination mission.
