Directed by Jon Amiel, The Core (2003) is an American science fiction disaster film. A series of diverse incidents involving the Earth’s magnetic field prompts geophysicist Dr. Josh Keyes and his colleagues, Dr. Serge Leveque and Dr. Conrad Zimsky, to conclude that the rotation of the Earth’s molten core has ceased. If not reactivated, this would result in the collapse of the field within months, leaving the surface vulnerable to harmful solar radiation exposure. To address this crisis, the U.S. government initiates a covert project to construct a vessel capable of drilling into the core and deploying nuclear arms to restart its rotation. This operation incorporates Dr. Ed ‘Braz’ Brazzelton’s groundbreaking material ‘Unobtainium’, which can convert extreme heat into electricity, as well as a state-of-the-art laser-powered drill array.

NASA pilots Commander Robert Iverson and Major Rebecca ‘Beck’ Childs are recruited to pilot the multi-chambered vessel Virgil, while computer expert Theodore Donald ‘Rat’ Finch joins them to keep news of the impending disaster and their efforts to revive the core from spreading on the internet. After being launched into the depths of the Marianas Trench, Virgil descends through the Earth’s crust. However, their journey takes a dangerous turn when they accidentally collide with a massive geode structure in the mantle, causing damage to their lasers upon impact at its base. Despite their best efforts to free the ship from the geode’s grasp, they are met with unexpected danger as magma floods into the structure and Iverson tragically perishes from falling debris.
