The Counselor (2013)
The Counselor (2013), directed by Ridley Scott and written by Cormac McCarthy, is a crime thriller film. In Mexico, cocaine is transported in barrels inside a sewage truck across the border to the United States. The drug is then stored at a sewage treatment plant. To purchase an engagement ring for his girlfriend Laura, The Counselor travels to Amsterdam to meet with a diamond dealer. Upon returning to the United States, he attends a party in Texas hosted by drug dealer Reiner and his girlfriend Malkina. During their conversation, The Counselor reveals his involvement in an upcoming drug deal with Reiner, which would be his first. Their discussion concludes with Reiner explaining a deadly device known as ‘the bolito’, which constricts and decapitates its victim when pulled around their neck.
Later, while having dinner with Laura, The Counselor proposes marriage and she gladly accepts. He then meets with Westray, a business associate of Reiner’s, to hand over his investment for the drug deal. During their meeting, Westray mentions the potential 4000% return on the deal but also warns The Counselor about the dangers of getting involved with Mexican cartels. Despite this cautionary advice, The Counselor maintains a confident demeanor. After their discussion, he stops by to see Ruth, a court-appointed client who is facing murder charges. She reveals that her son has been arrested for speeding and is unable to make bail. Ruth asks The Counselor for assistance and he agrees to help as a favor.
