The Crazies (1973) is an American science fiction horror film written and directed by George A. Romero. In a small town in Pennsylvania, a man commits a heinous act before his farmhouse burns to the ground. Firefighters David and Clank, both veterans of the Vietnam War, respond to the scene. Meanwhile, David’s pregnant girlfriend Judy, a nurse, is summoned to assist Dr. Brookmyre with treating the arsonist’s children who have suffered burns. However, when heavily armed U.S. troops led by Major Ryder take over the office, chaos ensues. It is revealed that days earlier, an Army plane carrying a deadly virus nicknamed ‘Trixie’ crashed near the town and contaminated the water supply. The virus causes its victims to become violently insane or die within days. To contain the situation, government officials send Colonel Peckem and Dr. Watts from the team responsible for creating the virus to Evans City in hopes of finding a cure before it’s too late.

Due to the outbreak of a dangerous virus, Evans City has been placed under martial law and quarantined. To enforce this, army soldiers have relocated the townspeople to a local high school, forcibly removing them from their homes and shooting those who try to escape. In response to the severity of the situation, bombers carrying nuclear weapons have been dispatched as a last resort. David, Judy, Clank, teenager Kathy Fulton, and her father Artie are among the group of survivors trying to find a way out of the town. After spending the night hidden in a country club, they make an attempt to escape through the nearby woods while evading both ground troops and an overhead helicopter. The group is able to overpower several soldiers in a house along their route. One of these soldiers decides to disclose information about the virus to David before being killed by Clank in self-defense as another soldier reaches for his gun.
