The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
The American fantasy romantic drama film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), directed by David Fincher, follows the loosely based storyline by Eric Roth and Robin Swicord on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1922 short story of the same name. In August 2005, Daisy Fuller shares with her daughter Caroline the tale of Mr. Gateau, a blind clockmaker commissioned to create a train station clock in 1918 as a tribute to those who lost their sons in World War I, including Gateau himself. As Daisy nears the end of her life in a New Orleans hospital, she asks Caroline to read from the diary of Benjamin Button. Born on November 11, 1918 with the appearance and ailments of an old man, Benjamin is forsaken by his father Thomas Button and left on the doorstep of a nursing home after his mother Caroline passes away during childbirth. He is raised by caretaker Queenie and cook Mr. Weathers, who name him Benjamin.
Over time, Benjamin becomes indistinguishable from the elderly residents at the nursing home, despite having a mind that remains childlike. As he ages in reverse, he progresses from a wheelchair to crutches and learns to walk independently. During the Thanksgiving of 1930, he crosses paths with Daisy, a seven-year-old girl whose grandmother also resides at the home. Instantly connecting with one another, they form a strong bond. Despite his physical limitations, Benjamin gains employment aboard the tugboat Chelsea under Captain Mike Clark. It is during this journey that Thomas introduces himself to Benjamin without revealing his true identity. In autumn of 1936, Benjamin sets off on another work engagement with the tugboat crew and embarks on a trip around the world. While away, he makes sure to stay in touch with Daisy by sending her postcards.
