The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001)
The crime comedy film, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001), was written and directed by Woody Allen and starred him as well. In 1940 New York City, efficiency expert Betty Ann Fitzgerald had a hidden relationship with her boss, Chris Magruder. He assured her that once his divorce from his wife was finalized, they could be together publicly. During a dinner at the Rainbow Room, magician Voltan enlisted Betty Ann and her co-worker C.W. Briggs to participate in his hypnotism act. By using the trigger words ‘Madagascar’ and ‘Constantinople’, they were put into a trance before being awakened. Later that evening, C.W. received a call from Voltan who used the word ‘Constantinople’ to command him to steal jewels while under hypnosis.
After waking up with no recollection of the crimes, C.W. sets out to investigate. His attention is soon drawn to Betty Ann’s questionable behavior (which he later discovers is due to her affair with Chris). In a desperate move, C.W. sneaks into her house and witnesses Chris revealing that he has reconciled with his wife and will not be getting a divorce. Overcome with distress, Betty Ann turns to alcohol and attempts to harm herself by jumping out of a window. C.W. intervenes and spends the night preventing her from causing harm to herself. As evidence begins to incriminate him, C.W. flees and seeks refuge at Betty Ann’s home where she reluctantly agrees to hide him. Believing C.W. is no longer an option, Voltan contacts Betty Ann and uses the trigger word ‘Madagascar’ in an attempt to hypnotize her and force her to steal for him.
