In the story, Jacques Saunière, a curator at the Louvre, is being pursued by an albino Catholic monk named Silas. Silas is determined to find the ‘keystone’ and destroy the Holy Grail. However, Saunière gives him false information before being tragically murdered. The police discover his body in a pose resembling Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. To help with the investigation, Police Captain Bezu Fache enlists American symbologist Robert Langdon, who happens to be in Paris for a lecture on symbols. When shown Saunière’s body and a hidden message that can only be read under UV light, Langdon discovers an out-of-order Fibonacci sequence. Sophie Neveu, Saunière’s granddaughter and a police cryptographer, reveals to Langdon that Fache has secretly placed a tracker on him after finding the words ‘P.S. Find Robert Langdon’ at the end of Saunière’s message.
According to Fache, Langdon is responsible for Saunière’s death. Sophie gets rid of the tracker, creating a diversion for the authorities while they discreetly navigate through the Louvre and uncover more clues within the works of Leonardo da Vinci. Langdon realizes that Saunière was actually the head of the Priory of Sion. Silas serves an unnamed individual known as ‘The Teacher’, alongside members of Opus Dei, under Bishop Aringarosa’s leadership. Following directions from Saunière, he arrives at a church and discovers a marker engraved with ‘Job 38:10’ – a bible verse that begins with ‘Here you shall come, and no farther…’ In a fit of rage, he commits murder against one of the nuns residing there. Meanwhile, Langdon and Sophie head to a French bank and gain access to Saunière’s safe deposit box by utilizing the Fibonacci sequence. Inside is a cryptex containing a message written on papyrus.
