Wes Anderson co-wrote and directed the American comedy-drama film, The Darjeeling Limited (2007). While in India, a businessman named Peter fails to catch his train of the same name, as he is beaten to it by a younger man. On board, Peter reunites with his brothers Francis and Jack after not seeing each other since their father’s funeral a year ago. Francis, who has undergone a motorcycle accident and is now covered in bandages, wants to reconcile with his brothers on a journey of self-discovery. He also hopes to find their mother Patricia, whom they have not seen in years. With the assistance of Brendan, his assistant, Francis creates a strict itinerary for the trip and takes his brothers’ passports to ensure they stay on the train until the designated stops.
In addition to mourning their father’s death, the brothers carry many pieces of luggage with his initials and personal belongings as they travel by train through the countryside, visiting different Hindu and Sikh temples. However, tensions arise as Peter and Jack grow increasingly frustrated with Francis’ controlling behavior. Eventually, Francis reveals that they will be meeting with their mother who has become a nun living in a Christian convent in the Himalayas. This news angers Peter and Jack, who would not have agreed to come if they had known earlier. As their frustration boils over, a physical altercation breaks out between the brothers on the train, causing distress among other passengers.
