The Dark Valley (2014)
The Dark Valley (2014) is an Austrian-German Western drama film directed by Andreas Prochaska. It is based on Thomas Willmann’s sole eponymous 2010 novel. The movie begins with a terrified young man and woman hiding in the basement of a wooden building. They are soon discovered by a group of men who brutally attack the man and kidnap them both. Some time later, a mysterious stranger arrives in a remote town in the Austrian Alps. Going by the name Mr. Greider, he claims to be a photographer and takes up residence with a widow who has recently lost her husband and son. The newcomer discovers that the town is under the control of an elderly wealthy man named Old Brenner and his six power-hungry sons. One day, the widow asks her daughter to go into town for some tasks and Greider offers to accompany her.
As Luzi does her shopping, Greider is also with her and asks for coffee and horseshoe nails. The brothers, who happen to be in the store as well, insist that he tries their schnapps. Despite politely declining because he doesn’t drink, one of the brothers forces him to comply through physical violence. Tragedy strikes when one of the Brenner brothers dies in a logging accident that appears to be an unfortunate coincidence. However, this same misfortune befalls another brother when he falls down a cliff due to being blinded by nails on a branch. In a heartbreaking discovery, their father finds nails in his son’s eyes after his death. Due to suspicion that Greider played a role in these incidents, he goes into hiding.
