The Day After (1983), an American television film, originally aired on ABC. Dr. Russell Oakes works at a hospital in Kansas City and spends time with his family, despite his daughter Marilyn’s plans to move away. In Harrisonville, located approximately 40 miles (64 km) southeast of Kansas City, the Dahlbergs prepare for their eldest daughter Denise’s wedding rehearsal with Bruce, a University of Kansas student from Lawrence. However, the young couple becomes preoccupied with sexual desires and family issues arise when Denise’s younger sister takes her birth control and Jim catches her sneaking back home the following morning. Meanwhile, Airman First Class Billy McCoy is stationed at a Minuteman launch site in Sweetsage, Missouri, which is about 20 miles (32 km) east of Kansas City.
Next door to the site, the Hendrys manage their farm and care for their children. In other parts of the globe, the relationship between the United States and Soviet Union becomes tense as the Warsaw Pact strengthens its presence just outside of West Germany. This includes deploying nuclear weapons and implementing a blockade on West Berlin. McCoy receives orders to leave his wife and infant daughter at Whiteman Air Force Base in Sedalia, Missouri after an ultimatum is issued by the US for the blockade to be disbanded by evening. However, when the Soviets refuse to comply with America’s demands, armed conflict erupts over the next few days. As news of the war and speculations of possible nuclear attacks in Europe surface, the American public struggles to maintain their daily routines.
