The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) is an American science fiction film, serving as a remake of the 1951 film with the same title, which was originally based on the 1940 short story Farewell to the Master. Way back in 1928, a lone mountaineer exploring the Karakoram mountains in India comes across a glowing sphere. After losing consciousness, he wakes up with a scar on his hand and finds that the sphere has vanished. Fast forward to present day, an unidentified object is spotted heading towards Earth from Jupiter’s orbit with potential to wipe out all life. In response, the U.S. government hastily enlists a team of scientists, including Helen Benson and her friend Michael Granier, to devise a survival strategy. Suddenly, the object decelerates and lands in Manhattan – later revealed to be a massive spherical spaceship. Helen and her fellow scientists, accompanied by military forces, swiftly make their way to the scene.
As an alien emerges, Helen rushes forward to greet it. However, in the chaos, the alien is suddenly shot. A colossal humanoid robot then appears and emits a deafening noise, briefly incapacitating everything around it. The injured extraterrestrial utters the words ‘Klaatu barada nikto’, causing the robot’s defensive reaction to cease. The scientists escort the alien to their lab, where they discover that its exterior skin is actually a bioengineered space suit made of placenta-like material covering a human-like entity. After performing surgery to remove the bullet, they witness rapid aging as the being transforms into Klaatu, resembling a mountaineer from 1928. Secretary of Defense Regina Jackson is informed by Klaatu that he represents a coalition of planetary civilizations and has been sent to discuss Earth’s impending ecocide with its leaders.
