Upon a flying saucer’s arrival in Washington, D.C., it quickly becomes surrounded by the United States Army. A humanoid emerges from the spacecraft and assures that he comes ‘in peace and with good will’. However, his unexpected opening of a small device leads to being shot and injured by a jittery soldier. Suddenly, a towering robot appears from the saucer and effortlessly destroys the soldiers’ weapons. The alien gives orders for Gort, the robot, to stop. He clarifies that the device was actually meant as a gift for the President of the United States, allowing him to study extraterrestrial life.
Klaatu, the alien, is then taken to Walter Reed Army Hospital where he undergoes surgery and uses a salve to swiftly heal his wound. Despite their efforts, the Army is unable to enter the saucer while Gort remains outside in stoic silence. Klaatu informs the President’s secretary, Mr. Harley, of a crucial message that needs to be delivered simultaneously to all world leaders. However, due to the current state of affairs, Mr. Harley explains that this is not feasible. In an effort to better understand human behavior and beliefs, Klaatu suggests spending time among ordinary people. Unfortunately, Mr. Harley declines the idea and confines Klaatu to his hospital room. Despite this setback, Klaatu manages to escape and takes up temporary residence at a boarding house under the alias of Mr. Carpenter, borrowed from a nearby dry cleaner’s tag.
