The Dead Zone (1983), an American sci-fi thriller directed by David Cronenberg, is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King and written by Jeffrey Boam. After experiencing a headache from a roller coaster ride in Castle Rock, Maine, Johnny Smith, a schoolteacher, declines his girlfriend Sarah’s offer to spend the night. However, after getting into a car accident on his way home in stormy weather, he ends up in a coma. When he wakes up under the care of neurologist Dr. Sam Weizak, he learns that five years have passed and Sarah is now married with children. Interestingly enough, Johnny discovers that he has gained the ability to psychically see into people’s lives when touching them physically – their pasts, presents and even future events. For example, when he touches a nurse’s hand, he sees her daughter trapped in a fire.
He also uncovers information about Weizak’s mother being alive despite thinking she had died during World War II and about another character’s sister taking her own life due to abuse inflicted by him. Despite successfully relearning to walk through physical therapy, Johnny still has a limp and relies on a cane. Sarah reconnects with him, but struggles to choose between her love for Johnny and her family. Eventually, their relationship falls apart. As word of Johnny’s ability spreads, Sheriff George Bannerman of Castle Rock reaches out to him for assistance in solving a string of murders. Initially reluctant, Johnny eventually agrees to aid in the investigation. Using his psychic gift, he uncovers that Deputy Frank Dodd is the culprit. Before Bannerman can apprehend Dodd, the deputy takes his own life.
