The show, based on Stephen King’s book of the same name, debuted in 2002 and was produced by Lionsgate Television and Paramount Network Television (later known as CBS Paramount Network Television). Prior to his accident, Johnny enjoyed a peaceful life in a small town where he worked as a science teacher. He was also engaged to Sarah, his childhood friend and fellow teacher. Moreover, he was a devoted son to his widowed mother who lived nearby. However, after six years in a coma, Johnny wakes up to find that everything has changed – his mother has passed away and Sarah is now married to someone else.
Johnny has discovered he possesses incredible psychic powers that enable him to glimpse into the private lives of those he lays a hand on. As he reconnects with his past and the people he once knew, he must also come to grips with his newfound abilities, which have the potential to be both a blessing and a curse. In his journey towards starting anew, Johnny finds support from Bruce, his devoted physical trainer turned friend; Gene Purdy, his mother’s priest who arranges a trust fund for him–though his intentions may not be entirely altruistic; and Sarah, who struggles to integrate Johnny back into her life without risking her marriage and family.
