The Deadly Affair (1967)
The film The Deadly Affair (1967) is a British spy movie based on John le Carré’s debut novel, Call for the Dead. Set in 1960s London, it follows MI5 agent Charles Dobbs as he investigates the supposed suicide of Samuel Fennan, a former Communist working for the Foreign Office. After Fennan’s death, Dobbs visits his widow and becomes suspicious about the circumstances of her husband’s passing. While at their home, Dobbs uncovers that Elsa lied about a wake-up call meant for her. As a Holocaust survivor, Elsa may hold valuable information about her husband’s death. Despite pressure from other government officials to drop the case, Dobbs teams up with former police inspector Mendel to continue their investigation.
Along the way, they uncover an intricate web of East European agents and are faced with danger when one of them attacks Dobbs and breaks his hand. Dobbs discovers that his promiscuous wife, Ann, plans to join a former World War II colleague, Dieter Frey, in Switzerland. In response, he sets a trap to uncover Elsa’s control and prove she is a spy. This takes place during a performance of “Edward II” at the Aldwych theatre. With his colleagues Bill Appleby and Mendel, Dobbs observes Elsa closely as they wait for someone to take the empty seat next to her. To his dismay, Dieter ends up being her control and sits down next to her. Once they realize they have been caught, Dieter calmly kills Elsa and escapes the theatre.
