The Deer Hunter (1978)

The American epic war drama film, The Deer Hunter (1978), was co-written and directed by Michael Cimino. Set in late 1968 in a tight-knit Slavic American community in Western Pennsylvania, it follows the story of three friends: Mike Vronsky, Steven Pushkov, and Nikanor ‘Nick’ Chevotarevich. The trio works at a steel mill and often goes hunting with their co-workers – Stanley (‘Stan’), Peter ‘Axel’ Axelrod, and John Welsh. As they prepare to leave for military service in Vietnam, Steven is engaged to Angela Ludhjduravic who has been secretly impregnated by another man. Meanwhile, Linda – who both Mike and Nick are in love with – moves into their home to escape her alcoholic father. At Steven and Angela’s wedding reception, Linda unexpectedly accepts Nick’s marriage proposal while dancing. Before leaving for Vietnam, Nick pleads with Mike to ensure his safe return. In a final hunting trip together, Mike takes down a deer with a single shot.
During the Vietnam War in early 1969, Mike, a member of Special Forces, finds himself trapped in a village with Nick and Steven. The three are held captive by the Viet Cong and are forced to play Russian roulette while their jailers make bets. When Steven disobeys and is punished, Mike steps in and convinces the captors to load three bullets into the revolver’s cylinder. Using the pistol, Nick and Mike overpower their captors and manage to escape, saving Steven in the process. As they float down the river, Nick gets shot in the leg. Luckily, they are rescued by an American helicopter; however, Steven falls back into the river. While Nick is flown away for medical treatment, Mike jumps into action and helps retrieve Steven who has broken his legs in the fall. Mike carries him until they come across refugees who are fleeing towards Saigon for safety.
