The Departed (2006)
The American crime thriller film, The Departed (2006), was directed by Martin Scorsese and written by William Monahan. It is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, and also draws inspiration from the Boston Winter Hill Gang. In 1980s Boston, Irish Mob leader Frank Costello takes a liking to a young Colin Sullivan. After many years, Sullivan becomes a spy for the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) and joins their Special Investigation Unit (SIU). Meanwhile, another recruit at the police academy named Billy Costigan is asked by Captain Queenan and Sergeant Dignam to go undercover as a criminal. Costigan serves time in prison to establish his cover and commits several crimes. Sullivan starts dating Madolyn Madden, a psychiatrist who becomes an important figure in both men’s lives.
As Costigan gets deeper into Costello’s organization over the following year, his mental state begins to decline. However, Queenan and Dignam urge him to push forward. Despite his struggles, Costigan continues his appointments with Madolyn. The MSP and Costello have discovered that there is a mole within their organizations. In order to uncover the identity of this traitor, they assign the task to Costigan and Sullivan. However, Costigan makes a startling discovery – that Costello is actually working as an FBI informant. He confides in Queenan about this revelation, but he also finds himself drawn into an affair with Madolyn. One night, while following Costello, Costigan witnesses him passing an envelope to Sullivan at an adult theater. Although instructed to get a good look at Sullivan’s face, Costigan is unable to do so.
