The film The Descendants (2011), directed by Alexander Payne, is a comedy-drama based on Kaui Hart Hemmings’ novel of the same name. It follows Honolulu-based attorney and sole trustee of a family trust, Matthew ‘Matt’ King, who is responsible for 25,000 acres of valuable land on Kauai that also holds sentimental value to his family. While Matt has diligently managed his own finances like his father before him, most of his cousins have recklessly spent their inheritances. However, with the trust expiring in seven years due to legal limitations, the King clan is pressuring Matt to sell the land for hundreds of millions of dollars. Meanwhile, a boating accident leaves Matt’s wife Elizabeth in a coma and he must navigate through the difficult situation with his two daughters – 10-year-old Scottie, who acts out for attention by bullying others, and 17-year-old Alex who has struggled with substance abuse and is away at a private boarding school on the Big Island.

After medical professionals confirm that Elizabeth’s coma is irreversible, they follow her living will and discontinue all life support. When Alex informs Matt, she reveals that on her last visit, she discovered Elizabeth was having an affair, causing a significant rift between mother and daughter. Two close family friends, Kai and Mark Mitchell, share with Matt that Elizabeth had been dissatisfied in her marriage and had romantic feelings for Brian Speer, a real estate agent. Upon notifying friends of Elizabeth’s condition so they could say farewell, Matt decides it would also be appropriate for Brian to have the chance to do the same. Along with Alex’s laid-back friend Sid, the group travels to Kauai to locate Brian.
