The Devil All the Time (2020)

The Devil All the Time (2020) is an American Southern Gothic psychological crime thriller film directed by Antonio Campos, co-written with his brother Paulo, based on Donald Ray Pollock’s novel of the same name. During World War II, while serving in the Solomon Islands, U.S. Marine Willard Russell witnesses Gunnery Sergeant Miller Jones being killed by Japanese soldiers. In order to end Jones’s suffering, Willard shoots him behind the ear. After returning home to Coal Creek, West Virginia, Willard stops in Meade, Ohio and meets Charlotte, a diner waitress, as well as photographer Carl Henderson. The two marry and move to Knockemstiff, Ohio where they have a son named Arvin. In 1950, Helen Hatton marries Roy Laferty – an eccentric evangelical preacher who uses venomous spiders during his sermons to showcase his unwavering faith in God. Together they have a daughter named Lenora.
During a sermon, Roy experiences a severe allergic reaction after being bitten by a spider on his face. This causes him to lose touch with reality and develop the belief that he can bring the dead back to life. He takes Helen into the woods, where he stabs her in the neck with a screwdriver and attempts to resurrect her, but ultimately fails. In his distraught state, Roy hitches a ride with Carl Henderson and his wife Sandy. Meanwhile, in 1957, Charlotte is diagnosed with cancer. Her husband Willard turns to fervent prayer in an attempt to influence God to heal her. As part of his extreme devotion, Willard sacrifices Arvin’s dog on a rustic cross in the woods behind their house. Tragically, Arvin is left orphaned and goes to live with his grandmother Emma, who has also taken in Lenora.
