The Devil's Advocate (1997)
The American supernatural horror film, The Devil’s Advocate (1997), tells the story of Kevin Lomax, a successful defense attorney from Gainesville, Florida. He has built a reputation for never losing a case. During one particularly challenging case defending Lloyd Gettys, who is accused of child molestation, Kevin discovers his client’s guilt. Despite this realization, he continues to mount a fierce defense and ultimately secures a ‘not guilty’ verdict by discrediting the victim through aggressive questioning. This impressive display catches the attention of a New York City law firm, who invites Kevin to assist with jury selection. After another successful outcome in court, the head of the firm, John Milton, offers Kevin a job. Excited about the opportunity to further his career, Kevin and his wife Mary Ann relocate to Manhattan.
However, as he dedicates himself entirely to work and neglects his wife in the process, tensions begin to arise between them. During a visit from Kevin’s devoutly religious mother Alice – who only ever had sex in order to conceive her son – she advises them to move back home after meeting Milton. Despite her pleas, Kevin refuses and continues down his ambitious path. Kevin is chosen to defend wealthy businessman Alex Cullen, who is accused of killing his wife, stepson, and a maid. As a result, Kevin spends less time with Mary Ann and begins to imagine a relationship with his co-worker, Christabella. Meanwhile, Mary Ann experiences disturbing visions of the law firm partners’ wives as demonic creatures and has a nightmare about her own reproductive organs being played with by a baby.
