The Devil's Own (1997)

The Devil’s Own (1997), directed by Alan J. Pakula, tells the story of Frankie McGuire and his involvement in the IRA. As a child, Frankie witnessed his father’s murder because of their republican beliefs. Twenty years later in Belfast, he and three other IRA members face an ambush by British forces. Despite losing two comrades, Frankie and Sean Phelan manage to escape with a British Army helicopter hot on their trail. In order to combat the British Army, Martin MacDuff decides that Stinger missiles are necessary for the IRA. Adopting the identity of ‘Rory Devaney’, Frankie heads to New York City to make the purchase. With the help of American Judge Peter Fitzsimmons, a long-time supporter of the IRA, he is able to stay with Irish-American NYPD Sergeant Tom O’Meara and his family on Staten Island.
Tom and his family warmly accepted Frankie into their home, believing him to be an immigrant construction worker named ‘Rory’. In the meantime, Sean was able to procure an old fishing boat for Frankie to use in smuggling the missiles back home. Furthermore, Frankie made arrangements with Billy Burke, a black market arms dealer and Irish mobster, to receive the missiles at a later date. Fitzsimmons securely sent the money for the deal through Megan Doherty, who had been posing as the O’Meara family’s nanny. The duffel bag of cash was hidden in their basement by Frankie. However, Megan later informed him that MacDuff had been apprehended by British authorities and they would have to postpone the deal; much to Burke’s dissatisfaction.
