Seven Years in Tibet (1997)
Seven Years in Tibet (1997) is an American biographical war drama film, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. It is based on the 1952 memoir of Austrian mountaineer and Schutzstaffel (SS) sergeant Heinrich Harrer, detailing his experiences in Tibet from 1944 to 1951. In 1939, Harrer leaves behind his pregnant wife to join Peter Aufschnaiter in an expedition to summit Nanga Parbat in British-ruled India (now part of Pakistan). However, when World War II begins, the British authorities arrest them as ‘enemy aliens’ – citizens of a country at war with the British Empire. The duo is then imprisoned in a camp for prisoners-of-war in Dehradun, located in the Himalayan foothills of present-day Uttarakhand. Meanwhile, Harrer’s wife Ingrid, who has given birth to their son, sends him divorce papers from Austria (then part of Nazi Germany), which he has not yet had a chance to see.
In 1944, Harrer and Aufschnaiter break out of prison and enter Tibet. Despite an initial rejection by the secluded nation, they successfully sneak into the Tibetan capital city of Lhasa. There, they are graciously taken in as guests by Tibetan diplomat Kungo Tsarong. Ngawang Jigme, a senior official, also befriends the foreigners and gifts them with tailor-made Western suits. Aufschnaiter falls in love with the talented tailor Pema Lhaki and they marry. On the other hand, after experiencing another unsuccessful relationship, Harrer chooses to remain single in order to focus on his new job of surveying the land. This decision causes disappointment among his friends.
