The biographical film, The Doors (1991), was directed and written by Oliver Stone and Randall Jahnson. It tells the story of the influential American rock band and their impact on music and counterculture. In 1949, a young Jim Morrison and his family are driving through New Mexico when they come across a fatal car accident involving an elderly Native American. Years later, in 1965, Jim finds himself in California immersed in the Venice Beach scene. During his time at UCLA, he falls in love with Pamela Courson and meets future bandmates Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore. Together they form The Doors, with Jim as their frontman. He convinces them to take a trip to Death Valley to experience psychedelic drugs before returning to Los Angeles where they gain a devoted following after performing at the famous Whisky a Go Go nightclub.
Jim’s wild behavior and inappropriate rendition of their hit song ‘The End’ leads to the group being removed from the club. After the performance, they are approached by music producer Paul A. Rothchild and Jac Holzman of Elektra Records, who offer them a contract to record their debut album. The band is soon invited to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, but are told by one of the producers that they must alter the lyrics in ‘Light My Fire’ because it references drugs. Despite this warning, Morrison still sings the original lyric during the live broadcast and as a result, they are banned from ever appearing on the show again. As the Doors’ success skyrockets, Jim becomes obsessed with his persona as ‘The Lizard King’ and develops a dangerous dependence on alcohol and drugs.
