The Australian mystery drama thriller film, The Dry (2020), was directed by Robert Connolly and written by both Connolly and Harry Cripps. It is based on Jane Harper’s book of the same title from 2016. Federal Agent Aaron Falk makes a trip back to his hometown of Kiewarra in Victoria for the funeral of his childhood friend Luke Hadler. Luke was believed to have killed his wife Karen and son Billy before taking his own life, leaving only their baby daughter Charlotte alive. Luke’s parents request that Falk remains in town to investigate the crime, despite his initial hesitations. Flashbacks reveal that Falk had left Kiewarra two decades earlier after being accused of causing his girlfriend Ellie’s death. Upon his return, he faces much resentment from the townspeople, especially from Ellie’s father Mal and her cousin Grant who still accuse him of lying and murder.

With the guidance of local sergeant Greg Raco, Falk delves into the events surrounding Luke’s death. They uncover that the crime was carried out using Remington shotgun shells, rather than Luke’s usual Winchesters. In his investigation, Falk also speaks with Scott Whitlam, Karen’s boss and the school principal. According to Whitlam, while Karen and Luke did face some financial struggles, there were no major issues in their relationship. Upon finding a library book receipt with ‘GRANT?’ scribbled on the back, Falk suspects that someone named Grant may be interested in purchasing the Hadler family farm since Luke’s parents are unable to manage it alone. During his visit with Gretchen, another friend from Luke’s childhood and Karen’s colleague, she reveals that Karen had been applying for school funding. Going through an old photo album together, Falk comes across a picture of Luke holding Gretchen’s newborn son Lachlan. He questions her about whether or not Luke was the father, to which she denies but indirectly confirms they were having an affair.
