The American survival thriller film, The Edge (1997), was written by David Mamet and directed by Lee Tamahori. Billionaire Charles Morse, photographer Robert ‘Bob’ Green, and Bob’s assistant Stephen are joined by Charles’s wife Mickey, a model, and a team of photographers at a remote Alaskan resort. Upon arrival, they are warned by Styles, the lodge proprietor, to be cautious with food as it may attract bears. During a surprise birthday celebration for Charles, he receives a watch from Mickey while Bob gifts him a pocket knife. As they continue their photo shoot, Charles notices Bob and Mickey exchanging flirtatious glances from afar. In need of a model and pressed for time, Bob decides to seek out Jack Hawk, a local hunter. Along with Charles and Stephen, they fly to Jack Hawk’s home only to find he is away hunting.

Attempting to locate him again, their plane unfortunately collides with birds causing it to crash into a nearby lake and killing the pilot. After a rough landing on the lake’s shore, Charles, Bob, and Stephen discover that Charles has lost his recently gifted survival book. As they spend the night by the water, they gather wood for a fire. The following morning, using a compass leaf to determine their direction, Charles leads them on a walk towards the south. However, their journey is abruptly interrupted by a giant male Kodiak bear who starts to chase them. Thankfully, Bob comes to Charles’s rescue as they escape over a log bridge. Despite this act of heroism, Charles begins to doubt his suspicions about Bob’s intentions for Mickey. Despite this setback, the trio continues on their way but soon realizes they have unknowingly circled back to the same lake.
