The Eiger Sanction (1975)
The Eiger Sanction (1975), an American action film, features both Clint Eastwood as director and leading actor. Adapted from the 1972 novel of the same name by Trevanian, it follows the story of Jonathan Hemlock – an art professor and skilled mountaineer who also happens to be a retired government assassin. Despite having left his previous profession behind, he is suddenly called back for two more ‘sanctions’ – or officially sanctioned killings. Throughout his time with the secretive government agency known as ‘C2’, Hemlock had amassed a personal collection of 21 rare masterpieces, all paid for with funds from his past assignments. Heading C2 is Dragon, a semi-albino ex-Nazi whose health is sustained by blood transfusions and who operates in darkness. Dragon tasks Hemlock with eliminating two individuals responsible for the death of another agent known as Wormwood.
Initially refusing to return to his old ways, Hemlock only agrees after Dragon threatens to reveal his art collection to the Internal Revenue Service. After receiving a substantial payment of $20,000 and a letter ensuring protection from the IRS, Hemlock traveled to Zürich to fulfill his first task. However, upon his return from Europe, he encountered C2’s Jemima Brown who deceived him and took off with the money and the exemption letter as Hemlock slept. In order to regain what was stolen, Dragon proposed that Hemlock complete another mission. Despite his initial reluctance, Hemlock agreed when he discovered that the C2 agent responsible for Baq’s death was actually his old comrade from their time serving together in Vietnam. As an ex-Green Beret, Baq had saved Hemlock’s life during their time in combat.
