An biographical comedy-drama film The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021), directed by Will Sharpe and written by Simon Stephenson and Will Sharpe, follows the journey of Louis Wain after his father’s death in 1881. As the only male and eldest brother, Louis takes on the role of breadwinner for his family consisting of five sisters and his mother. Despite being offered a full-time job as an illustrator at The Illustrated London News by editor Sir William Ingram, Louis declines in pursuit of composing music and playwriting to support his family. However, both ventures prove to be unsuccessful. Seeking help with caring for his sisters, Louis hires governess Emily Richardson, who quickly becomes a source of attraction for him. This causes tension with Louis’ eldest sister Caroline. Eventually, Louis realizes he must take the full-time position offered by Ingram in order to keep Emily as the governess.
One evening, Louis takes the family, including Emily, to the theatre as an educational outing to see The Tempest. While there, she offers him comfort in the men’s restroom as he has a recurring nightmare about drowning during the performance. Unfortunately, nosy neighbor Mrs. DuFrane spreads gossip about the incident and causes a scandal. Feeling embarrassed, Caroline decides to let her go that very night. However, before she can depart, Louis reveals his feelings for her and they embark on a courtship. In 1884, they tie the knot despite causing another scandal for the Wain family due to their age difference of 10 years and Caroline’s social status as a governess. They settle into a home in Hampstead where Louis takes on more freelance work as an artist to support his mother and sisters.
