Starring and directed by Sylvester Stallone, The Expendables (2010) follows a skilled group of mercenaries, also known as The Expendables, based in New Orleans on their mission to rescue hostages from Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden. Led by Barney Ross, the team includes skilled individuals such as blade specialist Lee Christmas, martial artist Yin Yang, military veteran Gunner Jensen, weapons specialist Hale Caesar, and demolitions expert Toll Road. During their operation, Gunner causes harm to the pirates but is stopped from taking further violent action by Yang at the advice of the team. As a result of his actions, Barney reluctantly dismisses Gunner. In another event, Christmas finds out that his girlfriend has left him for someone else. Meanwhile, Barney and his rival Trench Mauser seek assistance from ‘Mr. Church’ for a new assignment.

Trench hands over the contract to Barney, which involves taking down General Garza of Vilena Island in the Gulf of Mexico. Barney and Christmas travel to Vilena for a covert mission and meet their contact, Sandra. However, their cover is blown when they encounter Munroe, a former CIA agent who is using Garza as a front for his own profit schemes. Unbeknownst to them, Sandra is actually Garza’s daughter. Despite Barney’s decision to abort the mission, Sandra refuses to leave Vilena. Elsewhere, Gunner approaches Munroe for assistance and tensions escalate when Munroe resorts to waterboarding Sandra for information. Meanwhile, Christmas intervenes in Lacy’s abusive relationship with her new partner by revealing his true profession through physical force.
