The Fall (2006)
The adventure fantasy film, The Fall (2006), was directed and co-written by Tarsem and stars Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru, and Justine Waddell. It takes place in 1915 Los Angeles, where stuntman Roy Walker is hospitalized after a risky stunt gone wrong. He meets a young patient named Alexandria from Romania, who is recovering from a broken arm. Roy begins to share a grand story with her about Alexander the Great. Despite being told to leave the next day, Alexandria returns as promised and Roy continues his tale. As he weaves his fantasy world, Alexandria’s vivid imagination brings the characters to life. These heroes include an Indian warrior, a strong ex-slave named Otta Benga, an Italian explosives expert known as Luigi, Charles Darwin accompanied by his pet monkey Wallace, and a masked swashbuckling bandit.
Governor Odious, an evil ruler, has wronged the five heroes and they all seek revenge. Later on, a sixth hero, a mystic, joins their group. While Alexandria envisions her companions and those around her as characters in Roy’s story, she also becomes close to him. However, Roy has a hidden agenda – he wants Alexandria to steal morphine from the hospital pharmacy for his own plans of suicide. His love interest has left him for an actor he provided stunt footage for. Despite this ulterior motive, Alexandria returns with only three pills instead of the whole bottle. Upon questioning what happened to the others, she explains that she mistakenly flushed them down the toilet after misinterpreting the ‘E’ on Roy’s note as a ‘3’.
