There she meets Augustus ‘Gus’ Waters, who is there to support his friend Isaac, battling eye cancer. Despite losing a leg to bone cancer and going into remission, Gus remains optimistic. As they share their favorite books, Gus gives Hazel The Prince of Dawn while Hazel recommends An Imperial Affliction – a novel about a girl named Anna with cancer similar to Hazel’s own experience but with an abrupt ending. Its reclusive author, Peter Van Houten, has not been heard from since retreating to Amsterdam after its publication.
Weeks later, Gus has an update for Hazel. He has located Van Houten’s assistant, Lidewij, and has been corresponding with Van Houten via email. However, Van Houten will only answer their questions in person. To Hazel’s surprise, Gus presents her with tickets to Amsterdam that he obtained through a charity organization that grants wishes to children with critical illnesses. Despite a medical setback, Hazel is eventually given the green light from her doctors to make the trip. Arriving in Amsterdam, Gus declares his love for Hazel during a lovely dinner arranged by Van Houten. The next day, they visit Van Houten’s home but are taken aback when they discover his true nature as a spiteful drunkard. As it turns out, Lidewij was the one behind the emails and arranged the meeting without Van Houten’s knowledge.
