The Fever (2004)

The Fever (2004), a psychological drama produced by HBO Films and directed by Carlo Gabriel Nero, is based on the 1990 play of the same name by Nero and actor Wallace Shawn. The film centers on an unnamed urban sophisticate who experiences an existential crisis upon realizing the nature of world politics, economic exploitation, and shallow consumerism in her surroundings. In search for deeper understanding, she embarks on a journey to an unnamed third world country, which serves as an exotic location somewhere in Eastern Europe. However, her enjoyment of the country’s rare products is shattered when a journalist exposes the harsh reality behind the surface.
Intrigued by his suggestion to visit a nearby war-torn neighbor for a glimpse of true life in the region, she takes his advice and soon finds herself forever changed. After returning, and being more aware of the world around her, she realizes that she can no longer go back to her previous lifestyle focused on elitism and consumerism. Activities like attending operas, discussing art with friends, shopping for luxury items, and exaggerating her everyday problems seem insignificant compared to the larger issues she has recently become aware of. She starts to feel small in comparison to the global struggle for survival. Living a guilt-free and pleasure-filled life within a bubble has made her realize the need to look beyond comfort.
