Directed by David O. Russell, The Fighter (2010) is a biographical sports drama depicting the story of Micky Ward, an American welterweight boxer from Lowell, Massachusetts. Despite being managed by his mother, Alice Ward, and trained by his older half-brother, Dicky Eklund, Micky often finds himself being used as a ‘stepping stone’ for other boxers to defeat on their way up. Unfortunately, Dicky’s former success in the ring against Sugar Ray Leonard in 1978 has been overshadowed by his addiction to crack cocaine. Unaware that the documentary he is being filmed for is not about his ‘comeback’, Dicky prepares for a fight in Atlantic City while Micky’s opponent falls ill. As a last-minute replacement, Mike Mungin steps in as Micky’s opponent despite weighing 20 pounds heavier – a considerable difference in professional boxing and equating to two or three weight classes.

Despite Micky’s initial doubts, his family ultimately agrees in order to secure the purse and inform him that the original fighter is out of shape and rusty. However, upon arriving at the fight, they discover that the replacement fighter is well-prepared and easily defeats Micky. This defeat causes Micky to withdraw from society and begin a relationship with Charlene Fleming, a former collegiate athlete turned bartender. Despite this, Alice arranges for another fight for Micky after several weeks. However, Micky remains wary of repeating his previous loss. His mother and sisters point fingers at Charlene for lacking motivation within him. Additionally, Micky mentions receiving an offer to train in Las Vegas for pay but Dicky counters by offering a matching amount to keep working with their family.
