The Finest Hours (2016)
The film The Finest Hours (2016), directed by Craig Gillespie and produced by Walt Disney Pictures, follows Bernie Webber, a crewman at Coast Guard Station Chatham in Massachusetts. Bernie has fallen for local girl Miriam Pentinen and the two plan to marry on April 16. However, according to Coast Guard regulations, he must first seek permission from Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff. On February 18, 1952, the tanker SS Pendleton breaks in half during a nor’easter off the Chatham coast. With most of the station’s crew already occupied with another rescue mission, Bernie is tasked with piloting motor lifeboat CG 36500 to save the stranded Pendleton crew. Fellow crew members Andrew Fitzgerald, Ervin Maske, and Richard P. Livesey join him on this daring rescue mission.
Meanwhile, the Pendleton’s engineer, Ray Sybert, as the sole remaining senior officer, rallies the surviving seamen to guide the sinking stern of the tanker towards a submerged reef. This would allow it to remain stable until rescuers arrived. Miriam is informed that Bernie is leading the rescue operation and fears for his safety. The townspeople of Chatham have little faith in Cluff’s abilities due to his non-local status. Determined, Miriam drives to the station and demands that Cluff recall Bernie. However, Cluff dismisses her abruptly and orders her to leave. Between Chatham Harbor and the open sea lies a treacherous bar – a stretch of shallow waters known for its dangerous shoals, even in fair weather conditions. Bernie must carefully time bursts from his engine to ride each incoming wave before it crashes over him as he navigates CG 36500 across the bar. Despite his best efforts, he loses his compass during this perilous journey.
