Sydney Pollack directed The Firm (1993), an American legal thriller. Mitch McDeere, a top Harvard Law School graduate, is offered a lucrative position by boutique law firm Bendini, Lambert & Locke in Memphis, Tennessee. He and his wife Abby relocate there as he prepares for the Tennessee bar exam. Mitch receives guidance from senior partner Avery Tolar on the firm’s strict values of loyalty, confidentiality, and high fees. Despite the enticing perks such as a new house, a Mercedes-Benz, and paid-off student loans, Abby resents the firm’s interference in employees’ personal lives. Despite working long hours, Mitch passes the bar exam but this takes a toll on his marriage. With Avery’s help, he discovers that the firm primarily assists wealthy clients in concealing money through offshore shell corporations and other questionable tax-avoidance methods.
During a work trip to the Cayman Islands, Mitch discovers troubling information about his firm’s operations. While in the Cayman condominium, he uncovers evidence connected to the deaths of four former associates. Meanwhile, the security chief, Bill DeVasher, resorts to extortion and employs a prostitute to silence Mitch. In response, Mitch enlists the help of private investigator Eddie Lomax, who had previously served time with Ray, Mitch’s brother. However, Lomax is later murdered by hired hitmen in front of his secretary Tammy. The FBI then informs Mitch that BL&L’s top client is the Morolto crime family and that many of the firm’s lawyers are involved in illegal activities such as tax fraud and money laundering. Suspiciously, all four deceased associates had attempted to leave the firm prior to their deaths.
